'Het glazen hotel' van Emily St. John Mandel staat als vierde en voorlopig laatste boek geprogrammeerd in de lockdownleesclub van @NRCTwitLit. De beschrijving van het boek spreekt me aan, dus ik wil deze ronde nog een keer meedoen.
Nu heb ik het Engelstalige luisterboek gedownload................en ik heb het uit nog voor de #mandel echt van start is gegaan.
Wat een verhaal, wat een geweldige luisterbelevenis. Het boek heeft zoveel lagen, het gaat over fraude, leven in rijkdom, een parallele wereld, de dood en meer. Maar het gaat vooral over veerkracht. Ik zie die uitgedrukt in de centrale zin van de roman 'Why don’t you swallow broken glass?', neem je verlies en ga door, in een andere vorm, sterf desnoods, maar ga door.
De schrijfster over haar boek in een interview in The Guardian:
Ghostliness and hauntings permeate the novel. Would you describe it as a ghost story?Absolutely. It’s funny – I set out to write a book that was quite narrowly focused on the collapse and aftermath of a massive Ponzi scheme but by the end I’d written a ghost story wherein a Ponzi scheme was just one element. The truth is that I’d always wanted to write a ghost story. It’s a form that I love.
Reinvention and transformation are strong themes. It seems that for some characters it’s a strength, but for others a way to avoid reality and their own demons.Yes, I think that generally speaking a capacity for reinvention is wonderful. Often that can take the form of resilience when someone’s life is not going particularly well. To have the courage to do something completely different: I think that’s usually admirable. But sometimes that can just be an escape hatch.
