Rosa Bonheur

The resulting work, Plowing in the Nivernais, was a large painting, nearly four feet high and eight feet wide (260 cm x 133 cm). Rosa struggled to complete the commission the next year. Her final image of men and animals working together under a bright blue sky is an absolute sensation. Although two humans appear in the painting, the animals take center stage, their smooth coats contrasting with the rough texture of the rich, plowed earth. Rosa was proud of Ploughing in the Nivernais and painted several copies of it. It became one of her best-known paintings and was hung in the famous royal Palace of Fontainebleau. Finally, one critic paid the twenty-seven-year-old artist what he may have considered to be the ultimate compliment: "She paints like a man."
